Responsible Whale Watching and the Role of Photography in Research

Join us for this conversation to learn about key practices for responsible whale watching and what it takes to ensure sustainable marine tourism that respects marine life.

We are joined by renowned researcher Isabel Ávila, who has been studying whales for more than 27 years. Isabel will share the story behind one of her most famous photographs: the encounter between a mother whale and her calf during a breach, and everything it took to capture that moment.

We are also joined by Nicolas Gómez, a tour operator at Casa Balae who coordinates whale-watching experiences and promotes responsible tourism in the region. Through his work, he connects visitors with the natural richness of the Pacific coast and the communities that make these experiences possible.

Additionally, we will explore how photographs taken during cetacean watching can provide valuable information for research and conservation, and why it is important to capture them responsibly, without putting whales at risk or disrupting their natural behavior.
